Beholding the Perfect Man Heals

"The great spiritual fact must be brought out that man is, not shall be, perfect and immortal," writes Mrs. Eddy on page 428 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Man, then, is perfect and immortal! What a wonderful statement! When we have even a glimpse of this truth about man, what a vista of unlimited possibilities is opened before us! Yet, as long as our concept of man is based upon the evidence of the material senses, which claim that man lives in and because of matter, that he is controlled by material law, and therefore is imperfect, how far from the truth, "the great spiritual fact," we are! But mortal, material sense testimony is not true.

If it were true that man is material and mortal, that he lives in and because of matter or a material body, instead of in God, divine Mind, neither Christ Jesus nor any of the other Bible characters could have performed the healing work they did; or could there be any healing work done in Christian Science. But all healing work through spiritual means has been and is being accomplished because of the truth that man is spiritual, the reflection of God, the one perfect Mind, and that he therefore cannot be less than perfect or cease to express perfection.

In the first chapter of Genesis we read: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. . . . So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him." Clear and definite statements of man's relation to his creator! In Christian Science we learn that God is infinite Mind, eternal Life, Truth, and Love, the source or cause of all true being. Man made in the likeness of God cannot be unlike that of which he is the image or expression. Under the marginal heading "Indestructible relationship" (Science and Health, p. 470) Mrs. Eddy says of the unchanging perfection of man as the expression of God, perfect Mind: "God is the creator of man, and, the divine Principle of man remaining perfect, the divine idea or reflection, man, remains perfect. Man is the expression of God's being."
