A writer in his article last Friday evening gave a discourse on the execution of two murderers. In this article, as well as in many others that he has written, he artfully weaves his words into contexts that present concepts of Christian Science that may sound plausible to some, while ridiculous to others. Your readers should not be expected to accept such expositions of Christian Science, for the simple reason that they are not correct. To say that a murderer should be grateful for having been shot, and then infer that Christian Science teaches that the murderer need not fear death because it is "the valley of illusion" is inconsistent.

Death, according to Christian Science, is not the method whereby a murderer or anyone else can escape the responsibility of having to work out his salvation. Repentance and reformation are the only way to obtain release. The Scriptures say, "For the wages of sin is death;" and again, "The sting of death is sin."

The one best qualified to explain Christian Science is Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. She affirms the above Scriptural texts in her principal book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," in these words (p. 426): "Sin brought death, and death will disappear with the disappearance of sin;" and in another place in the same book (p. 290): "The murderer, though slain in the act, does not thereby forsake sin. . . . His thoughts are no purer until evil is disarmed by good."
