In Thursday's issue of the Register an evangelist is reported as saying that Christian Science denies the atonement of Christ Jesus through his blood. He further seeks to condemn Christian Science and ridicule it with the unwarrantable assertion that Christian Science is neither Christian nor Science. These statements coming from a minister of the gospel not only are incorrect but constitute an impropriety. As for the Christian Science teaching regarding the atonement of Christ Jesus, it adheres closely to the Scriptures on this subject. The atonement was for the purpose of reconciling man to God. The sacrifice made by Christ Jesus in the shedding of his blood is explained by Mrs. Eddy on page 25 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," as follows: "The spiritual essence of blood is sacrifice. . . . His true flesh and blood were his Life; and they truly eat his flesh and drink his blood, who partake of that divine Life." Jesus exemplified man's unity, or at-one-ment, with the Father.

Fair-minded persons are willing to accord Christian Scientists the right to their interpretations of Scripture—the same right that they hold for themselves.

As for the critic's statement that Christian Science is neither Christian nor Science, the facts do not justify his remark. "By their fruits ye shall know them" is the true test or proof of a Christian, and the only one by which the religion of Christian Science can rightly be judged.
