Item of Interest

Christian Scientists who have questioned whether Readers in church services, when reading citations from the Glossary of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," should not interpolate an expression designed to indicate that Mrs. Eddy is defining the term which begins the citation, will be interested to know the following:

Mrs. Eddy was once asked whether she wished some explanatory phrase introduced at this point when reading from the textbook, and she indicated that she did not. In the By-Law, Article III, Section 6, of the Church Manual, she includes the following with reference to Readers: "They shall make no remarks explanatory of the Lesson-Sermon at any time."

The inflection with which one reads a definition from the Glossary and the pause after reading the word which Mrs. Eddy defines help to give the hearers a clear understanding of the import of that which is being read.
