Christian Science teaches that the real man is made in the image and likeness of God, Spirit, and hence that this real man is wholly spiritual. It distinguishes clearly between the real man, made in the image of God, and the unreal so-called mortal man, of whom the Scriptures say, "His days are as grass."

Furthermore, Christian Science teaches that because God is infinite Spirit or Mind, the only source, origin, or cause, He is likewise the only substance. As stated on page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay. ... Spirit, the synonym of Mind, Soul, or God, is the only real substance." From this premise regarding substance, Christian Science declares that matter has no intelligence or substance.
