[Written for the Sentinel]

Niagara's Message

Swift , foaming torrent! How unceasingly
You pour your waters o'er yon brink
Downward in laughing ecstasy—
A cataclysm.

In ever active change of rhythmic tone
Your cataracts boom forth a song
Deeper in melody and joy
Than music's strain.

What power supreme your falls exemplify,
Rushing precipitate, as if
In answer to divine command,
Forever on!

Beauty! No pageantry can be compared
With nature's noble handiwork,
White-flecked and sparkling brilliantly
Before the sun.

Yet these are but the merest outward show;
Your vibrant message brings to thought
A higher, nobler sense of peace
And liberty;

And in the constancy of your supply
You point to that creative Mind
Which spake its primal word of Truth,
And it was done.

Your streams in their unending onward flow
Bespeak the ever present Love
Which saw what He had made and found
That it was good.
