I should like to tell of a wonderful healing through...
I should like to tell of a wonderful healing through Christian Science of a so-called inherited disease. For over fifteen years I suffered from continual headache, which, when I had much to do, was so bad that I collapsed and was obliged to keep to my bed for months together. I had also to fight against the physical and mental sufferings and difficulties which go with a weak nervous system, as well as disorderly organic functioning. Reading or sewing by lamplight caused great pain in my eyes and head. My sleep for long periods at different times was bad, and was disturbed by troubled dreams which left me tired on awakening. In later years I suffered from neuralgia which spread nearly all over my body, with accompanying pain.
During most of this time I was in contact with clever specialists and doctors, took medicine, and underwent different kinds of treatment—electric, massage, and so forth; but nothing helped me. Time after time, when strength failed me, I had to apply for sick leave from my work in the Civil Service, and often I was obliged to go to bed directly after my work, in order to be able to continue the following day. I might add that this disease had been in my family for several generations.
Four years ago I spent the summer months at a health resort in the mountains, but was obliged to resume my work in the autumn without having gained any relief to speak of. This made me exceedingly downhearted, because I had counted so much upon the holiday. The evening before I left the mountains I met a Christian Scientist, who gave me an outline of Christian Science teaching, and the address of a practitioner. The next day I returned to Stockholm more hopeful than ever before. I visited the practitioner, and though I was too tired to be able to understand much of the conversation. I felt that at last I should be freed from my long-standing chronic sufferings. The practitioner worked for me for several months, and I myself studied the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, as well as other Christian Science literature. During the time I was under treatment I went through one mental crisis after another, but made little progress. We tried daily to realize what Mrs. Eddy says on page 401 of the textbook, "This fermentation should not aggravate the disease, but should be as painless to man as to a fluid, since matter has no sensation and mortal mind only feels and sees materially;" but it was not until just before my healing that these disturbances ceased.
