Unshaken

How greatly mortals need stability, equanimity, poise, in order to remain unshaken by events which befall nations and individuals! Trying situations are sometimes dealt with through mortal will-power and a species of fortitude which may be rooted in pride, or may be a covering for fear. The valiant Paul, who had learned to use the weapons of Spirit, wrote to his converts, "Be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter." Because divine Principle is always unshaken, the Christian Scientist whose every thought looks to Principle in humble dependence and stanch fidelity will go through each day's work with a sense of spiritual dominion, unshaken by unkind words or the contents of his mail box! He will show an unshaken front, come what may, and this not through mortal self-righteousness or mortal self-reliance, but through spiritual reliance; not through pride, but humility; not through stolidity or indifference, but by means of conscious at-onement with the power of divine Principle, Love.

The Christian Scientist learns to remain unshaken regarding his health because he knows that he is looking for it to Mind and not to medical systems or human psychology. He is learning to prove that God is indeed the health of his countenance. Medical theories and methods of treatment are unstable, constantly appearing, constantly disappearing. Of such systems and of those mistakenly styled metaphysical, Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 269), "All other systems—systems based wholly or partly on knowledge gained through the material senses—are reeds shaken by the wind."

One's former views regarding prayer may also undergo a basic change when he turns to Christian Science. If his prayer was formerly one of appeal, addressed to an unknown God, he now learns with untold joy and increased faith that prayer as understood in Christian Science is directed to divine Love itself. Indeed, true prayer, true desire, is inspired by God, by Truth. If one finds that his former concepts regarding earth, heaven, and prayer are leaving him, or failing him, he may receive, as others have done, a basic and satisfying illumination on all these points through Christian Science; and in proportion as he is willing to leave the old for the new, the false for the true, he need pass through no period of puzzlement or loss.
