The Door of Thought
On page 392 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says: "Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously." Now a door is a means of entrance, approach, or access; hence, it is "at the door of thought" that we must take up our ceaseless, fearless watch.
Everyone at some time is tempted with the beliefs of error, manifested either as a sick mind, a sick body, sick morals, or a sick business. When any one of these conditions seems to be present, it is because we have allowed some thought which is unlike good to enter consciousness. We may find the error to be a thought of hatred or revenge; or self-pity may try to make us believe that although we have labored long and faithfully, yet conditions remain the same. But is not self-pity a phase of ingratitude? Have we not been looking so intently for something to appear or disappear materially, or for the problem to be solved as we have outlined, that we have given no place in our thoughts to good? Eyes that are closed cannot see the beauty of the flowers; nor can ears that are stopped hear the singing of the birds; neither can thought closed by false beliefs be filled with good until the erroneous thinking is destroyed.
Gratitude is an important aid in obtaining harmonious results; and if we daily express gratitude in word and deed,—thinking, doing, speaking, seeing, and hearing only good,—the understanding of spiritual reality will appear, and the false material concepts will disappear. Every kind word or deed, every worthy aspiration, is the manifestation of spiritual thinking. Let us remember that it is our privilege and duty to affirm and realize good at all times and under all circumstances; to know that man, as God's likeness, can reflect only what is perfect, and that, consequently, man cannot cognize the suggestions of so-called mortal mind. As, through the study of Christian Science, we learn that the real man is spiritual, and reach the true sense of Life as God, manifested only in that which is good, harmonious, and perfect, we experience true and complete healing.
