In 1912 I bought my first glasses, thinking to relieve an eye trouble. I had the glasses changed several times, and finally decided to see an eye specialist in Detroit. He advised an operation, but I refused it and returned home greatly discouraged. Later I went to Grand Rapids to see another specialist. He said I had a bad case of cataract and advised me to wait until it had reached the stage of development when an operation could be performed. With the thought of blindness facing me I returned home utterly discouraged, not knowing which way to turn for help.
In the summer of 1921 my daughter-in-law, who is a Christian Scientist, paid me a visit. In her room was a book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which I picked up and read out of curiosity. I soon found I could not leave the book alone, but desired to read it whenever I could. That winter I became blind, and the pain in my eyes and head was almost unbearable. When I discovered I could not see to read at all, the thought of blindness so overcame me that I was nearly crazed. I then decided to try another specialist, so went to Muskegon for that purpose; but little hope was given for the recovery of my sight. He gave me some medicine, which I took according to directions, but received no benefit therefrom. One day in utter desperation, while groping around trying to prepare dinner, I began to repeat the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation, as given in Science and Health (pp. 16, 17). To my surprise I was filled with an uplifted feeling, and I saw the coating drop from my eyes like scales. Looking down at a paper near by I found I could see to read. I was so overcome with joy that I wept and thanked God for this wonderful blessing. Since that time I have never worn glasses. I am also very grateful to the practitioner who so lovingly helped me in the overcoming of a severe nervous trouble.
It is a great joy to share in the activities of the local Christian Science Society, of which I am a member; and I am also deeply grateful for membership in The Mother Church. I am most grateful for the revelation of divine Principle through our Leader.
