Signs of the Times

[Editorial in the Weekly News, Brighton-Hove, England]

Our correspondent, "Churchman," appears to be nearly convinced that the Christian Science movement represents the "Ideal Church of God" but will not permit his conscience to have full sway. "Churchman" is viewing the movement from an entirely wrong angle, and we would courteously suggest that he might, with personal advantage, attend some of the meetings of the movement before rushing "in where angels fear to tread." "Churchman" states that he is waiting to see for himself the mighty healing influences of Christian Science and entirely overlooks the fact that religion is from "within" and not "without."

It is very evident that our correspondent is more inclined to lean towards commercialism than Christian service. The great Michelangelo on one occasion noticed in the streets of Rome a huge piece of ugly stone and later produced the same stone as one of the world's greatest pieces of art. "Churchman" is viewing the Christian Science movement in a similar way to those hundreds of pedestrians that had passed that stone, and it only needed the master hand and the foresight of the artist to see what others did not. Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy was a lady that the great Architect of the universe permitted "to see the light of healing," and it is only natural that she should desire "the light" to shine in dark places. We do very earnestly suggest that our correspondent accept our suggestion and attend one or two meetings of the Christian Science movement.
