Through the love of a devoted worker in Christian Science...
Through the love of a devoted worker in Christian Science, the healing truth was offered to me. I took little interest in it at the time, because I did not seem able to understand it. About six months later, a friend was instantaneously healed by a Christian Science practitioner of a disease from which he had suffered since boyhood. This healing awakened in me a desire to know what the power was that had healed him. I began the study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. An understanding of Christian Science began to develop, and with it came release, in some degree, from mental and physical troubles. Hereditary susceptibility to colds and bronchial troubles, which for several years had made it necessary for me to go into a hospital for two or three weeks in winter, was quickly healed; and I have had no medical help since that time. Many times I have been healed of physical illnesses; and through the consecrated work of a devoted practitioner I was healed in a few hours when the hand of death seemed to be laid on me.
About a year ago I was working alone at my mine in the mountains when I awoke one morning feeling very ill. The evidence to the physical senses seemed to be a high fever with great weakness. I was alone in my cabin, where no one was likely to call for several days or weeks, and for a moment or two fear tried to assert itself. Thought seemed clouded, but there quickly came to me these words: Take no thought for the body; Mind is the only medicine, and is with you. My thought cleared, and I got up. The Christian Science Hymnal was at hand, and I began singing the hymns. I sang continuously for about an hour. During the singing the fever disappeared, and I felt a sense of coolness, refreshment, and rest. I went to my work at the usual hour, and in the afternoon of the same day walked seven miles through the snow with a pack on my back.
On page 403 of Science and Health we read, "Mortal mind is constantly producing on mortal body the results of false opinion; and it will continue to do so, until mortal error is deprived of its imaginary powers by Truth." The belief that disease is real is false, and its supposed effects are destroyed by Truth.
