Through the application of the rules set forth in the...
Through the application of the rules set forth in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I was healed of the fear of death. After many years of suffering, during which I had the best treatment material science affords, I found myself in a helpless and hopeless condition, doctors having pronounced sentence of death upon me, and members of the family and friends having been informed of my possible immediate passing on. I had many ills, among them appendicitis and peritonitis, with tuberculosis being manifested in a more alarming degree daily; and I was unable to eat or sleep, although powerful sleeping drafts were administered and stimulants of various kinds given. The pain was almost unbearable, and there was no normal functioning of the body. My desire was that I might die, so little did I realize that this would not free me from inharmony.
Christian Science had been lovingly presented to me on different occasions, and thus I had known of this healing truth for some years. I positively and determinedly refused, however, to have Christian Science help until the doctor informed me that there was no hope of my recovery, and that he had done everything which he could possibly do. In this hour of darkness and despair I asked my mother, who had been in the home during my illness and was at my bedside, and who was an earnest student of Christian Science, for treatment. "The Publican's wail ... won his humble desire" (Science and Health, p. 448), for immediately all fear of death left me. Hope, strength, weight, and peaceful sleep began to return, and a normal appetite was also restored. In a very short time I was up and around, going about everywhere. This healing took place twenty-four years ago, and there has been no return of the conditions. Healings, protection, and blessings have since been mine, such as the healing of chronic tonsillitis, influenza, headaches, freedom from pain at the time of the removal of nerves from the teeth, desire for stimulants, and protection at the time of accidents.
The greatest blessing, however, is an ever increasing desire to love God more, to reflect more of the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," to love my fellow-man more and more, thus bearing witness to what Truth has done for me.
