Over sixteen years ago I was led to take up the study of Christian Science after being partly crippled for three years and also suffering from internal troubles. I was treated by several doctors, including two specialists, but remained much the same. I was then taken to the Christian Science church in Swansea. On leaving the church I was given a Christian Science Sentinel. After reading a few articles I felt confident that Christian Science could heal me. In these articles reference was made to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I felt that I must have this book at once; so the next day I borrowed it at the public free library. I began to study and practice its teachings to the best of my ability, and in four days felt slightly better. This gave me courage, and I persevered, relying on and trusting absolutely in God to give me the understanding necessary. My condition improved a little every day; and in a month I felt ever so much better and stronger, but was still unable to walk without support.
Then I went to the same church a second time, to a Sunday service. I was obliged to lean heavily on my stick. As "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) was read I felt myself becoming suddenly well, and I walked out of church without having to use a support of any kind. I walked home, a distance of about two miles. I was overwhelmed with joy, and had a wonderful sense of freedom. This experience I shall never forget; and I shall never cease to be grateful for it. I was able to attend to my duties and accomplish work that was quite beyond me before. I went out every day during the following week and walked long distances. It was wonderful to be able to walk again.
At the end of the week I went to the church again, as I felt I wanted to tell someone of my joy. Although the physical healing was complete, I was troubled in thought as to whether it would last. I spoke of this to a friend at the church whom I knew afterwards as a practitioner. After a loving talk with her my thought completely changed, and I had no fear that there would be a return of the complaint.
