In your recent issue a doctor discussed Christian Science and mistakenly attributed to Christian Scientists actions that are impossible in those who are healing sin and sickness through spiritual means alone. Unless a person is sincere, honest, and truthful, he cannot heal through Christian Science, and the fact that numerous cases of sin and disease have been healed through Christian Science indicates that the practitioners of this religion are worthy of the respect in which they are held by the public. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 448), Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says, "It is Christian Science to do right, and nothing short of right-doing has any claim to the name." Christian Science is Christian; and it follows faithfully the precepts of Christ Jesus, whose purpose was primarily to destroy the sin of the world. But did not the Master heal sickness at the same time that he destroyed sin? Jesus healed all manner of sickness through spiritual means alone, without using drugs or any material remedy; and he said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also."
Christian Science employs the same healing method that was used by Christ Jesus, and does not depend on matter in any way for healing. Christian Science destroys sin and heals both functional and organic disease. Authenticated testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals testify to the healing of sin and of cancer, of tuberculosis, tumors, ulcers, piles, diabetes, insanity, and of other conditions and diseases, some of which reputable physicians have regarded as incurable. When Jesus destroyed sickness and overcame death, he proved that they were not fixed facts. When the palsied man ceased to be palsied, the disease was no longer a reality to him; and when Lazarus was raised from the dead, death ceased to be a real condition to Lazarus. Then, why should Christian Scientists be criticized for speaking of the unreality of sickness, sin, and death? Do not all of us hope eventually to enjoy freedom from such discordant conditions; and will not sin, disease, and death then be entirely outside our experience—or "unreal" to us?
Christian Science treatment is based upon the understanding that God is good, that He does not create evil of any kind, and that the real spiritual man, God's image and likeness, has dominion over all. Fortune telling, hocus-pocus, spiritualism, theosophy, Coueism, and material psychology have no relation to Christian Science. Christian Science lifts the thought, character, and life of the individual to a higher level, where one joyously depends on the law of God, divine Mind; but the other systems mentioned employ suggestion, which is a product of the so-called human mind. Mrs. Eddy was pure in thought, character, and life; and she was a consecrated student of the Bible. During her study of the Bible its pages were illumined, and she was enabled to discover the spiritual healing method of Christ Jesus. Christ Jesus was conscious of the nearness and loving-kindness of God, and prayed daily to Him. Christian Scientists enjoy in a measure the same serene confidence in the Father's goodness and omnipresence, and pray fervently and continually to Him. But their prayers are not set formulas or pleas that God will change His plan and grant mistaken requests; their prayers are conscientious realizations of the truth of God's goodness and of the real man's relation to Him. Through this knowledge of the truth mankind drops ungodlike qualities.
