In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 266) Mrs. Eddy says: "Would existence without personal friends be to you a blank? Then the time will come when you will be solitary, left without sympathy; but this seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love. When this hour of development comes, even if you cling to a sense of personal joys, spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth. Friends will betray and enemies will slander, until the lesson is sufficient to exalt you; for 'man's extremity is God's opportunity.'" Mortal mind, halting at its destruction, would have us believe that the elimination of false beliefs and the purification of self through the above radical process, is unnecessary. But we need not be afraid, for the only price for harmony and peace required of mankind is the abandoning of sinful and erroneous thoughts, and the acceptance of the allness of God, good, as a standard for daily activities. My gratitude goes out to all who have weathered the storms of mortal sense for the betterment of mankind, especially to Christ Jesus and Mrs. Eddy, who have done so much to clarify the religious atmosphere.
After nine years of varied experiences and earnest striving for an understanding of God and man's relation to Him, I am grateful to be able to say that the above statement in Science and Health does not now seem strange to me. I have witnessed the loss of a loved one, of material possessions and an earthly home, with a fortitude previously unknown. Moreover, I have been compelled to see the impermanence of material things. This has cleared the way for better quality thoughts, eliminated fretful anxiety, and brought the realization that as one rises above selfishness and hypocrisy the wonders of divine Love unfold. While the gods of this world are cruel, and the pains of separation acute, yet there is not one sorrow or grief which cannot be replaced with the right idea, bringing the consciousness of victory and a taste of spiritual joy. Realities unfold to the degree that unrealities are rejected.
In addition to mental adjustments I am grateful for many physical healings, such as the overcoming of rheumatism, stomach disorders, deafness, the necessity for wearing glasses, chronic headaches, and fatigue. The smoking habit of fifty years' standing was destroyed within a week by one treatment. Most of these healings resulted after considerable time and patient obedience to the rules laid down in Christian Science.
