Faithful Witnesses

A true Christian Scientist is God's witness; and the faithful performance of this sacred task is the supreme purpose of his daily life. With Christ Jesus he must learn to say from the heart, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth." What a noble incentive, what an upward trend, this true witnessing lends to human endeavor! How it allies thought to divine Principle and lifts it above the temporal into the eternal, while at the same time insuring the more perfect fulfillment of daily duties! Since Christ Jesus is humanity's Way-shower, it is imperative that everyone should walk in his footsteps.

In the article on Godlikeness in her Message to The Mother Church for 1902 Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 16), "The meek might, sublime patience, wonderful works, and opening not his mouth in self-defense against false witnesses, express the life of Godlikeness." Jesus proved that the actions, decisions, and utterances inspired by divine Mind require no mortal self-justification.

The Christian Scientist who is learning to bear witness to the infinite patience and serenity of divine Love is not found expressing impatience or unkindness. He is not off guard, but on guard. God's witness is unfearing because there is no fear in the God to whom he is bearing witness. Why does the beloved disciple make the definite statement that "there is no fear in love"? Doubtless because Love is Spirit, which knows no matter. Fear pertains only to materiality. Thus, as spirituality increases, fear, the accompaniment of materiality, diminishes. One cannot, therefore, consistently bear witness both to divine Love and to material fears. Fear is always a false witness. When tempted to entertain fear for anyone, strength is found through obedience to the commandment, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour."
