A letter quoted in an article entitled "Churches and Sincerity," in the issue of your paper of August 10, refers to "pulpits that go so far as to proclaim that there is no sin, no suffering, and no evil in the world." Inasmuch as your readers would probably take this statement as referring to the teaching of Christian Science regarding the unreality of evil, I shall appreciate space in your columns for this letter of explanation and correction.

It is a misrepresentation of the teaching of Christian Science to say that it proclaims "that there is no sin, no suffering, and no evil in the world" and leave the subject there. Christian Science does deny the reality of sin, suffering, and evil. It does not deny, however, that sin, suffering, and evil seem a constituent part of human experience with which all mankind has to contend. The misapprehension of the teaching of Christian Science regarding the denial of the reality of evil arises from the fact that it is believed by many that Christian Science denies the reality of evil from the standpoint of the material senses.

Christian Science denies the reality of evil from a purely spiritual standpoint regarding God and man and the universe. It declares that because God is infinite Spirit or Mind, that Spirit or Mind is All, the only source, or cause, and that because this is the absolute truth about God, the absolute truth about man and the universe is that they are wholly spiritual. From this standpoint of absolute truth Christian Science denies the reality of sin, evil, and suffering—of everything, indeed, that is unlike God, good, and His spiritual, perfect creation.
