[Written for the Sentinel]

Songs in the Night

IN the starlit dark of the silent night,
Thy song comes unto me;
And from the peace of a grateful heart,
My song is raised to Thee.

Thy song is a benediction soft,
Whispering all is well.

My song to Thee is a pæan of praise—
A love that no words can tell.

Oh, songs in the night that come to bless
And sing our cares away,
They soothe like mother-love's caress,
And change the night to day!

Dear God, may Thy reassuring song
Be heard in our night of woe,
Till our hearts shall echo Thy "All is well"
And with gratitude o'erflow.

Then our song shall ring with the years of good—
Memories rich that prove
Thy constant care. Our song of faith
Shall rise to the heart of Love!

Oh, songs in the night that come to bless
And sing our cares away,
They soothe like mother-love's caress,
And change the night to day!
