I became interested in Christian Science through a friend's healing of inflammatory rheumatism. I obtained a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began to read, never thinking of being healed myself, although I was then in great need of healing; but I wanted to learn what Christian Science taught about God. I became so absorbed in the book that I read it almost constantly, and one day it became clear to me that I was entirely free from a distressing physical disorder from which I had suffered for a long time, and from which material remedies had given me no relief. At that time I did not fully understand just how this healing came about, but Mrs. Eddy says on page 152 of the textbook, "Truth has a healing effect, even when not fully understood."
One of my first healings was when I saw the mental nature of all disease, and understood why material remedies had failed to help me. I at once cleared my house of all medicine. I have been healed of gallstones, also of a tendency to take cold. I was healed instantaneously of ptomaine poisoning. I am grateful for the understanding Christian Science gives us of the Bible. Passages which seemed to me unexplainable, Christian Science showed to be demonstrable facts which we may prove for ourselves in our everyday life.
Christian Science has indeed been the promised Comforter in my life for over twenty years, and it is showing me how to accept the loving invitation of Christ Jesus, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." This coming must be through the activity of the Christ-idea in human consciousness. Mrs. Eddy says on page 174 of Science and Health: "Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practised." I am grateful for this final revelation of Truth. —(Mrs.) Lina Matheus, Seattle, Washington.
