When I contrast my outlook on life now with what it was...

When I contrast my outlook on life now with what it was before I heard of Christian Science, much of the sense of limitation still to be overcome yields to that of humble gratitude.

Christian Science has indeed lifted me out of the slough of despond. It was brought to me when I was a patient in a neurological convalescent home, suffering from acute neurasthenia and unfit for employment of any kind. At that time I was assessed by the War Pensions Ministry as a hundred per cent disability case. Very soon after I heard of Christian Science, this assessment was reduced to twenty per cent. I had been shown sufficient of Love's true assessment of my real self to state to the next Pensions Assessment Board that I no longer considered myself a case for a pension; with which they concurred.

Only those who are passing through the particular hell of self-condemnation and depression classified by the medical profession as neurasthenia, can fully appreciate the regenerating influence necessary to bring about the uplifting which I found in Christian Science. It has brought to me a growing confidence in a self other than a wretchedly self-critical one. For the encouragement of those whose progress under Christian Science treatment may still be imperceptible to them, I would add that the clouds of sense-testimony did not just roll away from me either. But by giving recognition to the improvement in thought which the least knowledge of Christian Science inevitably brings with it, and endeavoring to recognize the source thereof, I have proportionably been enabled to reflect the harmony which God alone gives.
