Some twenty-five years ago I was visiting friends in northern New York state, and while there for the first time I heard of Christian Science. My friends were Christian Scientists, and they explained something of Christian Science to me. At that time I thought it foolish, as it did not square in any way with opinions which I held, and which I believed to be correct. About fifteen years after that meeting I had an attack of illness. Associated with that illness was an extremely nervous condition which prevented me from sleeping at night, or regularly at any other time, and I felt very ill. I had been under a doctor's treatment, but instead of improving I felt worse, and was frightened.

It then came to me that perhaps Christian Science might help me. I had another friend who had been healed and restored through its ministration when, to my knowledge, the physicians had pronounced him incurable. My memory brought back some of the things which had been said to me many years before, so I rang up the one who had been healed and asked him whether Christian Science could help me. He said it would help anybody, and gave me the name and address of a practitioner. I called on the practitioner, and was told to read certain verses in Matthew that night. I did not understand that when the practitioner worked she was doing it silently, and all that I heard was that I should read the verses in Matthew.

I confess that I felt very despondent, because I expected a different method of treatment. When I returned home, my wife asked me whether I felt better, and I said no, that I thought Christian Science was all nonsense. I had, however, agreed to read the verses in Matthew, and I determined to do so. As I read them I fell asleep and did not wake until morning. I had had an instantaneous healing, but at the time did not realize it. It was the first night's sleep I had enjoyed in months. From that night to this day, and it is now about nine years, I have never had a return of that condition, and know that I was perfectly healed at that time.
