About four years ago I heard Christian Science spoken of for the first time. I was then, from every point of view, mentally and physically at "man's extremity." Since the war I had suffered a great deal, and several physicians had declared that I was incurable. I had very weak lungs, and had emphysema to such a degree that it was impossible for me to go upstairs without stopping several times. I breathed with difficulty, and at night had severe attacks of suffocation. I could not remain in a reclining position, and these attacks always ended in hemorrhages. Moreover, I was very stout, weighing about two hundred and sixty pounds. I ate a great deal of meat, and drank old wines, believing I would find strength in these foods.

It was at this time that God sent me a messenger, a Christian Scientist, who gave me some pamphlets to read. I could never describe the joy and comfort that these pamphlets brought to me; I reread them several times, and meanwhile I had been lent a Bible and the wonderful book by Mrs. Eddy, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

I understood that what this book contained was the truth about the real life of man. From that time I have not desired any medicine or doctors. I stopped eating food for the purpose of gaining strength, for I had learned that real food is spiritual, and that God would take care of the body. Three months later I was entirely healed; I had lost about thirty pounds, and the emphysema had disappeared. People who had known me before the healing had difficulty in recognizing me.
