[Original testimony in German]
My first experience in Christian Science was an instantaneous...
My first experience in Christian Science was an instantaneous healing of malaria. I had contracted this disease in 1917 during the war, and the attacks, with all their alarming symptoms, had repeatedly returned in spite of all the medical remedies I applied. I had also been obliged to take especially large doses of quinine. The doctors told me this disease would continue to return. One day in 1922, when I was especially sick and wretched, the doctor found my condition to be very serious.
The same day my mother went to see a friend, a Christian Scientist, who had told her about Christian Science once before. My mother told her of my condition, and she replied that it was not necessary for me to be sick if I would apply Christian Science. At my mother's request she gave her some short explanations concerning the truth. My mother repeated to me all that she had heard. I clung steadfastly to these thoughts of Truth, and from the very first moment was convinced that God could help me. Next morning, Wednesday, I arose and felt well; and in the evening I went to a Christian Science testimony meeting for the first time. As though by a miracle I suddenly felt free from this serious sickness, and it has never returned. I now attend the local services, and visit the Reading Room regularly.
In my work, too, as a volunteer fireman I have experienced God's protecting power. Once when a cellar was on fire, the place was so full of smoke that no one dared to venture in without a smoke mask, and immediate help was very necessary. I could not work so quickly with a mask, so I went in without one, but with sure confidence in God. As I always do in such cases, I clung to the thought that God fills all space, and that I, as His child, am always surrounded by the atmosphere of divine Love; and I knew, too, that in such cases work was being done for me according to this teaching. I soon found a place where the smoke seemed to rise above me; and so I was able to work for some time undisturbed, and until the danger was over.
