In the year 1912, I first heard of Christian Science, and...

In the year 1912, I first heard of Christian Science, and soon thereafter saw a copy of the Christian Science Herald, where I found these words of Mrs. Eddy quoted from "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 206): "'Good is my God, and my God is good. Love is my God, and my God is Love.'" This appealed to me as the most logical and practical statement I had ever heard, and brought God at once as a positive power into my life. Instead of being "a God afar off," He became to me a God "at hand," "a very present help in trouble."

At that time I was in need of greater trust in God, and I therefore resolved to investigate Christian Science. To that end I borrowed a copy of Mrs. Eddy's book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." After about a year of spasmodic reading I met a Christian Science practitioner (there was no Christian Science church or society in this place), who advised me to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly. From that time on I have studied them faithfully, and step by step have tried to apply Christian Science in my daily life and have not found it wanting.

Since 1914, I have not been ill a single day, so I can truly bear witness to the preventive power of Christian Science. For my five children it has also been a preventive and healing power. I am grateful for all these blessings, but still more so for the spiritual understanding which Mrs. Eddy's inspired explanation of the Scriptures has brought me, and which has made all these "signs following" possible. My wish is to "abide in the vine," that I may be able to bear "much fruit."
