In February, 1913, I attended for the first time one of the free lectures on Christian Science. Little did I dream what an awakening would come to me that Sunday afternoon. Everything the lecturer said seemed so logical to me that I was very happy when someone handed me a Christian Science Sentinel on leaving the hall. This periodical I read from cover to cover that very evening, and I decided at once to take up the study of Christian Science.
I had been almost constantly under the care of doctors for more than twenty years, suffering from a complication of diseases—chronic stomach trouble, liver complaint, heart trouble, and frequent attacks of malaria, chills, and fever. I also wen to Europe because doctors advised it; but everything failed: I did not even get relief.
After attending the lecture, I borrowed a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from a kind neighbor, went to the next Wednesday evening testimony meeting with her, and bought a copy of the book for myself, reading it every minute I could spare. On Sundays I went to what I then called "my own church." After I had attended seven Christian Science Wednesday evening meetings, I read one evening in the Christian Science textbook (p. 7): "The 'divine ear' is not an auditory nerve. It is the all-hearing and all-knowing Mind, to whom each need of man is always known and by whom it will be supplied." This seemed very beautiful and comforting to me; I repeated it over and over again, and did not take any medicine, but relied on God's power to help me. I was very much surprised when I awakened the next morning to find that I had been sleeping peacefully all through the night, and that I had an appetite for breakfast; both of which I had not known for many years. I felt that I was healed. The study of Science and Health accomplished in seven weeks what kind and patient doctors had failed to do in twenty years.
