God's Holy Name

"For the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain."—Exodus 20:7.

I am tired! Does God grow weary
When the days seem overlong?
Never is an hour so dreary
But can be made bright and cheery
With a praiseful song.

I am sick! Can God be ailing,
Fevered, thralled by racking pain?
Think that ever can be failing
Of His strength? Nay, all-availing
Doth its store remain.

I am fearful! Can you vision
God as shrinking in dismay?
Nay, the thought evokes derision;
Judge him guilty of misprision
Who doth God gainsay.

I AM—God's own name! Revere it
Far too much to use in vain;
From unworthy consort clear it,
So that all who daily hear it
Shall true concept gain.

I AM—perfect! Let reflection
Of this truth with you abide,
That beneath its sweet protection
You may know divine selection
And wake satisfied.
