The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Oakland, California (Fifth Church). Lecturer: John J. Flinn; introduced by Mrs. Anne Wheeler Fried, who said:—

In the Preface to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founderof Christian Science, states (p. vii): "Ignorance of God is no longer the stepping-stone to faith. The only guarantee of obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to know aright is Life eternal." And Christian Science supplies this right understanding, which eliminates fear and superstition, and gives in their place the comfort and peace that result from the knowledge of a God of love, tender, merciful, all-powerful, ever present, ever available. Armed with this understanding of God the student of Christian Science goes forth to battle with sin, disease, and death; and through this understanding he is able to say with the Apostle James, "Shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works." Twelve years ago I came to Christian Science for the healing of a loved one; and with this healing I too began to understand God aright. Since that time God, divine Principle, had been our only physician.
