It is only necessary for me to paint a picture of two stages in my life which by their contrast will show clearly the cause of my immeasurable gratitude for Christian Science. The first stage was about seven years ago. I found myself walking the streets of a western city despondent, discouraged, and disgusted with what I conceived life to be. My wife and baby were in a near-by city, but I had no money to send for them nor to go to them. I was out of a position and owed several thousand dollars, a good portion of which had been spent in medical treatment for our baby, who to mortal sense had been born crippled. The only available material source that I could possibly have appealed to for aid was my family, and a stubborn sense of pride prevented me from doing this.

At this point I turned to Christian Science, not as a religion, but as the only thing yet untried which might bring relief from physical and financial problems. To-day the certain and swift release from seeming trials, whether physical, financial, or mental, is the least of Christian Science to me. The intervening years have been full of earnest striving. First steps were accompanied with much suffering, for human will obstructed the vision; but as we learn to subjugate material self the progress is more apparent and a sweet sense of joy is experienced.

The second stage I would picture is the present. Earnest study and honest application of Christian Science, together with the loving help of practitioners, have enabled us to exchange sickness for health, lack and limitation for a concept of real substance, which never fails to meet all human needs, and the cold nothingness of intellectuality for the warm love of a Father-Mother God. I have left behind the smoking habit, an expensive and worthless companion for fourteen years. Our little boy, who until about three years ago had never been without casts or braces and could not stand alone when they were discarded, is now running around in the freedom of his divine heritage as God's perfect child. Material evidences, always the last to acknowledge Truth, are gradually following the change in thought and will soon yield to Truth.
