Soon after I began the study of Christian Science, and just when I thought that no material condition could ever alarm me again, I became deaf. I recalled that some members of my family had been deaf. I had learned enough of Christian Science not to tell people of my seeming affliction; but the next day, quite discouraged, I went to a practitioner and asked for help. I told her that I had never heard of anyone being healed of deafness, either with or without Science. The practitioner promptly told me that if I never had heard of anyone being healed of deafness I very soon would, and after helping me she asked me to go home and study. I did study most diligently, looking neither to the right nor to the left, so intent was I on the truths contained in the Bible and in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. While I did not seem to be entirely relieved of my fear, I did not have a single doubt, after what the practitioner had said, that I would be healed.

On the third day after this, while reading the words of the Master, "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always," I was so perfectly conscious that He had heard my cry and that I was healed that I did not even hurry to test my hearing, which has been perfect ever since. This physical healing brought with it such an uplifted mental state that my feet seemed hardly to touch the earth, for I was being allowed to partake of the "joy ... in heaven over one sinner that repenteth." In this experience I had repented of and laid down much of my belief in materiality. And just as He heard my cry then, according to the vision that I had, He has been hearing my earnest prayer ever since, and each day I grow more confident that He will hear me always.

I can only express my gratitude to the Father for His two faithful sentinels, Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy, by bringing my life as nearly into accord with their teachings as is possible.
