So many wonderful blessings have come into my life...
So many wonderful blessings have come into my life through Christian Science that I feel constrained to tell at least a part of them. It was in the year 1887 that I first heard the words "Christian Science." Upon inquiry I was told that it was a new method of healing the sick, the one Jesus had used. I had been suffering from a nervous disease for a number of years, and it gradually undermined my health, until I was broken down and, indeed, in a miserable plight. Health and strength to enable me to care for a family were a necessity; instead, I seemed hastening to a premature grave. The outlook on life was dark and discouraging. We had exhausted all ordinary means of restoration, including change of climate and outdoor life. The demands on my time and strength increased as the children grew.
About this time my husband heard of Christian Science and took me to a practitioner. During the conversation which followed, the practitioner told me it was God who healed. I had always believed in God in the old way, and that the Bible was His revealed word. The Scientist made some explanations regarding Christian Science healing. She remarked, "It is God that heals." I knew from that moment my healing was assured. In a short time I was entirely recovered of the disease, and there has been no return of it.
The children and I embraced Christian Science,—that is, what we knew about it,—procured the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began the study, endeavoring to put into practice the truths we learned. In 1895 I became a member of The Mother Church, shortly afterwards uniting with a branch church There were many problems to be worked out in after years. We found that whenever Christian Science was honestly applied to the situation, the solution was at hand; Truth was always victorious. We discovered, too, that in the degree of our fidelity to the rules laid down in Science and Health we were healed and protected from sin and bodily danger. All the sicknesses that usually attend childhood and youth were routed by understanding their nothingness and the absence of any law to support them. Contagious diseases, broken bones, injuries from accidents, pangs of childbirth, sorrow, separation, lack of supply,—even the fear of death itself,—have been overcome by the realization that God is the only Life and the Giver of every good and perfect gift.
