In an article in a recent issue of your paper, entitled "Hits and Misses," you refer to "Christian Science or Coueism" in a way that might lead your readers to think that these are identical or similar, whereas they are in fact opposites. Coueism is said to be a form of autosuggestion, which suggestion has its origin in the human or "carnal" mind, as Paul puts it. Christian Science, on the contrary, has its origin in the immortal divine Mind, which is God. It is essential, in order to understand the great difference between Christian Science and autosuggestion, to be able to distinguish between the so-called thoughts which proceed from the "carnal" mind, and those thoughts which proceed from the immortal divine Mind. On page 37 of "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mary Baker Eddy is the following: "Immortal Mind is God; and this Mind is made manifest in all thoughts and desires that draw mankind toward purity, health, holiness, and the spiritual facts of being." The "carnal" or mortal mind is the opposite of immortal Mind and seems to be manifest in all thoughts and desires which draw mankind toward impurity, discord, disease, sin, and death. In Christian Science the thoughts which proceed from God, immortal Mind, are found to be real and eternal, while the thoughts which proceed from the carnal or mortal mind are proved unreal and temporal. Anyone who will may learn to make this distinction in his own thinking, and thus understand the difference between Christian Science and autosuggestion.
