A desire to know how to pray and to know God led me to...
A desire to know how to pray and to know God led me to the study of Christian Science. Five years previous to the time I began this study, when our first child was born, my prayers failed to save. The result of that loss was a sense of grief which proved almost unbearable, and which the remedy, time, in no wise healed.
The first time I read the chapter on Prayer in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I felt that this book would answer my questions. After attending the Christian Science Sunday School about a month, our four-year-old boy made a demonstration over the sting of bees. When asked if it hurt badly, he answered, "No, for our Sunday school teacher told us that if we say, 'Our Father which art in heaven,' then nothing can hurt us." Shortly after that, while reading our textbook, I received an instantaneous healing of neuralgia in an acute form. From that time on we experienced many healings, a great many of them being instantaneous.
The first realization that I was being healed of the grief mentioned above came a few months after beginning this study, while reading Mrs. Eddy's words on page 206 of Science and Health: "Does God send sickness, giving the mother her child for the brief space of a few years and then taking it away by death? Is God creating anew what He has already created?" How happy I was to know that evil is not God's will; that I was beginning to know Him; that it was right to be well and happy! At that time began the healing of a great sense of fear that we would lose our other children also, for our belief in the so-called law of chance was being destroyed. After about three years of earnest study of the Bible and Science and Health I was healed of that sense of grief, and I now value the many hours of consecrated study required to bring about the healing.
