Christian Science was introduced to me shortly after I...
Christian Science was introduced to me shortly after I had come over to England, thinking I might find happiness in a complete change of surroundings. An old Christian Science Quarterly was handed to me by a friend who, pointing to the words "Christian Science," said simply: "This is something which could make you happy; if you wish to know about it, go to the Christian Science Reading Room [of which she gave me the address], and ask for the Christian Science textbook." I had never heard of Christian Science before; but I was then in a very desperate condition, sick in mind and body, and just willing to try anything which might help me, though I had very little hope of ever being well and happy.
A few days later I went to the Christian Science Reading Room and borrowed "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science textbook, by Mary Baker Eddy. I returned home and began to read the book, but found it very difficult, as I knew very little English (the textbook had not then been translated into French). The following Sunday I found my way to the Christian Science church; and, though I could hardly follow the reading, I knew there was something good in Christian Science. A great peace had come to me, and though I could not understand at the time how the truth was already working in me, I left the church quite a different person, and determined to investigate Christian Science more fully; which I did. A new hope had dawned upon me; and very soon after that my life began to be one of real happiness, my health also improving wonderfully. I might mention that before I left my home in Paris, our family doctor did all he could to prevent my going, saying that I could not live longer than three months in the English climate; but I thought to myself that if so, it would put an end to my sufferings and I was beginning to feel I had borne them long enough!
This was almost fifteen years ago. During the years since then Christian Science has become everything to me. It has brought me that perfect peace which comes from God, and therefore cannot be taken away from me; it has revealed a God who is my ever present help and to whom I can always turn. However large or small the problem, there is always a solution to it, and Christian Science reveals the manner of solving it.
