Teaching the Scriptures

The spiritual education of our children in the Christian Science Sunday School is one of the important branches of our organization. Mrs. Eddy in "Pulpit and Press" (p. 9) speaks of the children as "the bulwarks of freedom, the cement of society, the hope of our race!" In view of this, she definitely sets forth a method of procedure for their instruction. In Article XX, Section 2, of the Church Manual we are told to teach them the Scriptures; and in Section 3 a precise outline for teaching is given. Evidently Mrs. Eddy desired to encourage the study of the Bible with the light of Christian Science thrown upon its sacred pages, because it is a fount of spiritual knowledge and understanding.

Jesus was a thorough student of the Old Testament. He was able to substantiate his arguments with quotations from its Scriptures, and silenced many malicious attacks in that way. He admonished his followers to search the Scriptures; and in rebuking their ignorance of them, he said, "Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures."

The inspired Word of the Bible was, however, not generally understood until Mrs. Eddy in her sublime love for humanity withdrew from society, gave up every selfish interest, and spent three years in coming closer to the fount of all wisdom through the study of the Scriptures. As a result and reward, Mrs. Eddy gave to the world our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the book that is bringing so much health and peace to the world.
