In your recent issue a correspondent declares that the claim of Christian Science to teach the Christianity of Jesus is hardly tenable, because, to be a Christian, according to his opinion, you must believe that Jesus is God. "Faith in this doctrine," he says, "which, of course, cannot be proved by reason—alone entitles a man, in strictness, to describe himself as a Christian." Christian Scientists hold firmly to Christ Jesus' own declaration about himself that he was the Son of God. He spoke of God as Father always, and came to the world to bring to the apprehension of mortals the true idea of sonship, as the divine idea which existed with the Father before the world was, and will exist and reign until all false concepts are destroyed. It was this true idea of sonship—the Christ—which healed the sick and sinful centuries ago, and which will remain throughout all time to take away the sins and diseases of humanity. If, as our critic avers, Jesus taught that he was God, would he have said, "Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God? Again, many saw Jesus, and talked with him, yet in John's Gospel it is written: "No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him."

Your correspondent says that if Christian Science attained the object of helping the believer to do good, and avoid evil, no sane man would condemn it. He should find out for himself what Christian Science is doing in this respect, and then he would see that what he has been condemning is his own misconception of Christian Science. The moral transformation which takes place in the lives of many men and women who earnestly study this teaching is such as to lead many, who are watching, to embrace Christian Science. A pure life is the solid rock and necessary foundation in the experience and activity of the Christian Scientist, for a mentality clouded by sin can never accomplish the healing works demanded by the Saviour; and only he who refuses to yield to temptation and overcomes sinful tendencies and desires is able to be the means of bringing the divine light of spiritual reality and its healing power into the lives of his fellow-men. On page 2 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes, "Goodness attains the demonstration of Truth."
