Divine Power Unlimited
Many believe that the age in which we are living is probably the most enlightened in the world's history. There would seem to be good reason for the belief, since no historical record exists to show that in bygone days men ever approached anywhere near the position attained by modern science, so called, whose discoveries in the last fifty years have been simply marvelous to those competent to appraise them. And what is still more wonderful, the last half century has witnessed a growth in spiritual understanding without precedent in religious history. With the discovery of Christian Science by Mrs. Eddy a great spiritual light came to the world whereby men were able to perceive the true nature of God and the true mode of operation of His laws, being thereby enabled to utilize divine power to an extent many of them had previously thought impossible.
Now Christian Science does not keep anyone in doubt as to what it has to say about God and divine power. Its teachings are plain and simple; so plain and simple, indeed, that little children can readily apprehend them. Briefly, it declares that God is infinite, and that, therefore, His power is unlimited; and further, that since God is Spirit, His power must be spiritual. From this it follows that there is no real power in existence other than divine or spiritual power; or, in other words, there is no real material power. Mrs. Eddy states the position definitely when she writes on page 228 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God."
When Mrs. Eddy made her great discovery known to the world, nearly all who heard of it were skeptical; for were not matter and material power so evident to everybody! But she pointed, first, to the works of the Founder of Christianity, Christ Jesus himself, in proof of her assertion, showing that through his understanding of divine power he had destroyed the beliefs of sin, disease, and death, beliefs which sprang from the fallacy that matter and material law were real, and, second, to the healings from all manner of disease and sin which she and others instructed in Christian Science brought about. Jesus healed through his understanding of the unlimited nature of divine power and his obedience to spiritual law. Christian Scientists do precisely the same, according to the measure of their understanding and obedience.
