Early one March evening, while sweeping snow from my doorsteps, I fell on the frozen ground, hurting my right hip so badly that I could not take a step. I crawled into the house and sat on a chair until morning, when I was taken to the home of a niece, as I lived alone. The following day I wrote to a Christian Science practitioner for help.

For about two weeks I seemed to experience no help from the treatment, so I acquiesced in the wishes of relatives and friends, who were not interested in Christian Science, and called in a physician to diagnose the case. I will repeat his words as nearly as I can recall them. He said: "It is an intercapsular fracture of the hip, and one limb is one half inch shorter than the other. Your walking days are over. You may sometime get about a little with a crutch or cane." Nothing was said about adjusting the bones, as I was then seventy-eight years old.

In about six weeks I longed to go home. Thinking I could walk, I took a few steps, with someone at my side, walking a little better each day, until in May I could walk out of doors with the help of a cane. In July I could walk without assistance of any kind and without a limp, as my limbs had become the same length.
