[Written for the Sentinel]

A Prayer for Faith

Without Thee, God, are all endeavors vain;
No joy, no satisfaction can be mine
Until Thy First Commandment I obey,
And cleanse my heart, and place my hand in Thine.

No righteous prayer for victory is void;
'Tis but a quick 'ning of my faith I ask;
For all about entanglements seem laid,
And grievous oft, to mortal sense, life's task.

The two-edged sword of Truth is at my side;
Oh, let me feel its hilt within my hand!
Raise high before my sight Thy standard, Truth,
And let me plant my feet and take my stand.
