On Contributing to Our Periodicals

In admonishing her numerous personal correspondents to send their letters to The Christian Science Journal, Mrs. Eddy in "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 155, 156) records sentiments wholly applicable to the present-day situation regarding contributions to all the Christian Science periodicals. "Methinks," she writes, "were they [her students] to contemplate the universal charge wherewith divine Love has entrusted us, in behalf of a suffering race, they would contribute oftener to the pages of this swift vehicle of scientific thought; for it reaches a vast number of earnest readers, and seekers after Truth." In these words did our Leader point the duty of her students relative to The Christian Science Journal.

The privilege of contributing to the Christian Science periodicals is generally shared by members of The Mother Church. The rule has long been established that only members should have that privilege; and since the number of contributions received from the members meets the need, it seems justifiable to accept as contributors only those who have identified themselves with the Christian Science movement to the extent of seeking membership in the church established by Mrs. Eddy.

Many Christian Scientists are grateful for the privilege of sharing with the field the fruits of their own spiritual growth. Not only does the contributor profit from the mental discipline of putting his thoughts into definite statements, but also through the sharing of his blessings with others he is reciprocally blessed. The words of the hymn, "Ceasing to give, we cease to have," are no less applicable to the sharing of our mental blessings than to the sharing of our material largess with those in need.
