"The fountain of life"

WHAT a comforting prophecy was that of the Psalmist: "They [the children of men] shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. For with thee is the fountain of life." The vision of the Hebrew poet had penetrated the mist of matter; and lo, he beheld God as the source of life, from which flowed that abundance of which all men might partake.

It is a great happiness to remember that the Hebrew race shared to some extent in the understanding of God we possess to-day. Indeed, it was they, with their spiritual vision, who laid the foundation of the very understanding which Christian Science has given us. God has been gradually revealed to men, chiefly through the genius of the Hebrews, who were a gifted race spiritually; and we do not forget that from them sprang the greatest of all spiritual seers, the beloved Master himself, Christ Jesus. And what was the tenor of their mighty theme? It was the actuality of God as creator, preserver, friend, the origin or source of all real or true being. The sacred pages of the Old and New Testaments reveal in a remarkable manner the fact of God's immanence and power, and His unbounded love for the children of men.

But it has to be admitted that even though Christ Jesus taught the measureless love of God and demonstrated its power as no other had done before him, his words have too often fallen on dull ears, and his deeds have been misunderstood or misinterpreted. The records of the centuries, from the early Christian church onwards, testify to faith burning brightly at times, religious fervor often struggling against persecution, inspiration bursting through only at rare intervals, and from perhaps the third century a cessation of these works of healing which characterized the ministry of Christ Jesus and the work of the early church. The faith, the inspiration, the understanding which had enabled these healings to be done, seemed to depart in great measure as ritualism and dogma took the place of individual communion with and faith in the Most High.
