Noblesville Daily Ledger
The article, "Religious Healing," which appears in your recent issue, while not unkindly in its tone, is more or less misleading. For instance, the association of religion with matters of health is no new thing, as was intimated therein. The very foundation of the Christian religion, as laid by Christ Jesus, centered around the healing of sickness. The Master measured the efficacy of the spirituality of his followers by their ability to overcome sin and heal disease. When asked by his disciples why they could not heal the sick child, he said, "Because of your unbelief;" and, "This kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." Never since Jesus did his work among men has the healing of disease been separated from the Christian religion. To be sure, spiritual healing was temporarily lost or little used for many centuries, but the teachings and injunctions of the Master remained unchanged; and because of this fact the healing of disease should be a demonstrated function of the church. The Principle of the spiritual or religious healing taught by Christ Jesus was rediscovered in 1866 and revealed to the world in Christian Science by Mrs. Eddy. Through this understanding, God's power to heal has again been manifested and consistently demonstrated by Christian Scientists since that time.
The question as to whether Christian Science is on a "scientifically sound basis, which could be used with good conscience in treating the sick," is indisputably answered by the history of that religion and in the practical application of its teachings. It is not necessary to elaborate this fact, as in practically every community in this country and in many throughout the world there are living witnesses who, as beneficiaries of the healing power of Christian Science, bear grateful testimony continually to its efficacy. Christian Science is the Christian religion. It is neither a competitor of medical practice, nor hostile to medical doctors, as was charged in the article under discussion. Practitioners in material systems of treating sickness and the followers of some religious teachings do not understand the spiritual teachings of Christian Science, and because of this they make incorrect statements about it; but no real Christian Scientist bears any animosity toward either. Mrs. Eddy's admonition to students of Christian Science is (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 444), "If ecclesiastical sects or medical schools turn a deaf ear to the teachings of Christian Science, then part from these opponents as did Abraham when he parted from Lot, and say in thy heart: 'Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.'"
