I did not come to Christian Science primarily for physical...

I did not come to Christian Science primarily for physical healing, but for relief from the disappointments, heartaches, and misunderstandings that arise from contact with the world. I had searched for happiness, contentment, and harmonious surroundings; but I never found them in any lasting degree, and was becoming dissatisfied and disheartened as a consequence of many unhappy experiences.

Then I heard of Christian Science and learned that others had been benefited by the study of it; so I went to the Christian Science church in my home town. I enjoyed the service from the start, and felt a sense of peace and uplift that was very gratifying. During the "few moments of silent prayer," which is part of every Christian Science service, I realized that I had not known how to pray; but the words of one of our Leader's hymns we had sung came to my thought, "Shepherd, show me how to go" (Poems, p. 14), and I just repeated these words over and over. That prayer was answered. I certainly have been shown the way.

After I had attended a few services, business called me away and I found myself in a large city with a long, tedious journey ahead of me, which I dreaded, as on previous rides of great distance I had suffered much from sick headaches. I had tried almost all material remedies to prevent this distress, but to no avail. So the thought came to me that now was the time to see what Christian Science could do. I found a practitioner and told her my fears. She said, "Do not fear; you will have no headache." We talked a while, and when I was leaving she handed me two copies of the Christian Science Sentinel to read. I was about to say, "Oh, I never try to read on the train," but something kept me from saying it; so I just thanked her and put them in my bag.
