In your recent issue you report a gentleman as criticizing the constructions put on various passages of Scripture by Christian Scientists. From the report of the address, it is apparent that the gentleman has failed in his examination of the subject to understand the teachings of Christian Science. In particular, he has not learned to distinguish between the references and statements with regard to man made in the image and likeness of God, and to mortal man or Adam. He also has not appreciated that the real in Christian Science is the immutable, immortal, spiritual, harmonious, and eternal. To tell one who had met with an accident that he would get better if he merely "told himself to get better," as our critic avers, is not in accordance with the teachings of Christian Science. Christ Jesus denied all reality to evil conditions, and healed them by his spiritual understanding. Christian Scientists are, in all humility, following in the way he marked out, and rejoice to-day that the promise, "These signs shall follow them that believe," is being manifested among us. Christian Science is practical, demonstrable Christianity, which does not say, "Believe blindly on God and wait for a future salvation," but, "Understand and prove what God is now."
