Signs of the Times
[Rev. B. C. Taylor, in the Item, New Orleans, Louisiana]
Religion and life are essential factors in human destiny. They are inseparable. One is incomplete without the other. They coalesce in the finest expression... in Jesus of Nazareth. They are raised to the nth degree in his relationship to humanity. These two words mean more to civilization than any two words in the English language, and yet, they have so often been divorced from each other that men have put a question mark up over them. Religion, too often, has been compartmentized into another worldly, impractical ideal, with no vital challenge for the average man. It has been an elective in the great curriculum of life, rather than a major subject in the daily experiences of mankind. This has resulted in an unsettled, troubled, restless, humanity. Where there is no religion, there is unhappiness. Life, on the other hand, has too long been robbed of its spontaneity by selfishness, greed, and unholy desires. This has made it meaningless, and at the slightest whim it is snuffed out. One has only to look at the sorrowing, lonely, thirsty, hungry, yearning lives of men to see that religion and life must be brought together. This does not mean repression, but release and freedom in a joyous experience. In this experience there is happiness, there is discovery, there is high purpose. Life becomes meaningful and glorious; religion becomes real and vital. Then is fulfilled the great mission of Jesus: "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
