The Privilege of Activity
HOW prevalent among mortals is the weary sense of working for a living! The very thought of such work brings to many a picture of drudgery and unhappiness. And so numbers of people look forward to retirement from business into ease and self-indulgence; they associate happiness with idleness; they hope that the future will be one in which work is eliminated.
How wonderfully does Christian Science correct the false concepts of this world through the revealed truth which is ever present to destroy all erroneous beliefs! Christian Science reveals the divine law of activity, showing that God, divine Mind, is ever active. "He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep," we read in Psalms. And man as the idea of Mind is ever active. As mortals grasp the Science of being, they manifest more energy and a greater capacity to accomplish good. The future holds the promise of larger attainment and richer experience as mortals awaken more fully to Truth. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 58) Mrs. Eddy says, "If God does not govern the action of man, it is inharmonious: if He does govern it, the action is Science."
Students of Christian Science who read The Christian Science Monitor regularly cannot fail to gain a broader outlook. Their interests widen; their activities increase; their joy is quickened. They desire to understand world-problems more clearly, so that they may help to solve them. They desire to read better books; to hear better music; to become better acquainted with the good deeds of others. In short, Christian Scientists who read the Monitor attain a world-wide viewpoint. And this is a corrective to self-centered thinking, which is narrow and often sluggish.
