The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Joplin, Missouri (First Church).

Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduced by Bernard Joseph Hinkle, who said:—

There is no one who is not in need of a better understanding of God. And an understanding of God, good, is what constitutes the kingdom of heaven in man. If we earnestly listen with this thought in mind, we shall receive the help we need. Sin, sickness, poverty,—all troubles,—yield to the power of Truth; and it is through Christian Science that we learn to utilize this power.

The basis of mankind's difficulties is a misconception of God, who is Life. The quite general misunderstanding of creation as set forth in the Bible is the foundation of mortal discord. The right understanding of divine Mind and its creation and the application of this knowledge to daily experience is what makes for present contentment and peace.

Mary Baker Eddy, the revered Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, explains creation clearly and fully in her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science. Should you study, ponder, and realize the truth of her scientific interpretation of Genesis, as given therein, it will pay you large dividends in health and success. Just reading this book has healed thousands, including myself, of many discordant conditions. The cigarette and pipe habit of over thirty years' duration has yielded to Christian Science treatment, after repeated attempts to become free through will-power had failed. Since this healing my general health has been fifty per cent better. I have also been healed of a violent attack of stomach and bowel trouble, in addition to other physical, mental, and moral inharmonies.

Cassel, Germany (Society).

Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn; introduced by Emil Haupt, who said:—

If we read in the Book of books, the Bible, we shall detect that the search after Truth and the highest sense of good has always prevailed among mankind. I think I can justly say that to-day more than ever before the desire to be delivered from sin and disease is especially great. Christ Jesus once said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." This prophecy has been fulfilled, because through Christian Science mankind has received anew the truth concerning God, man, and the universe.

When I heard of Christian Science I was soon convinced that it was the religion I was seeking for—the religion taught and practiced by Christ Jesus—and that those who lived and practiced this religion would be freed from all seeming troubles, including sickness. Christian Science teaches us how to gain this freedom, pointing out to humanity that by changing and adjusting one's thought to divine Principle the harmonious activity of divine Truth and Love is demonstrated.

Los Angeles, California (Fourth Church).

Lecturer: W. Stuart Booth; introduced by Herman P. Thomas, who said:—

In the apparent strife and confusion of our present-day living, what could be more reassuring, more helpful, than to be awakened to the glorious realization that there is in existence to-day, as surely as there was nineteen centuries ago, a simple, definite, applicable law of God. It matters not whether our problem be a moral, social, financial, or political one, whether it be between individuals or between nations, this law is ever available, needing but to be understood to be made operative. Christian Science came into our home over twenty-four years ago, at a time when there seemed little hope of the recovery of my mother from a disease of many years' standing. It has been my privilege to experience many other healings through the application of this law of God.

Wellington, New Zealand (Second Church).

Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by Walter Alfred Tanner, who said:—

My first introduction to Christian Science was through seeing a fellow worker healed of a dread disease. This aroused my active interest, as I, too, was in need of healing.

I immediately commenced to study Christian Science under the guidance of an experienced and faithful practitioner, and the results were truly wonderful. In two days I was healed of an internal trouble of nearly twenty years' standing, and soon afterwards I realized that I was released from the bondage of tuberculosis, for which disease I had three times been surgically operated upon. That healing took place seven years ago. From the moment I realized that I was healed, my main purpose in life has been to gain more of this understanding and to help others to a participation in it.
