For ten years I was an invalid, under the care of various physicians, even going through an operation, hoping it might give relief. The last doctor, a specialist and a fine Christian gentleman, finally told me that nothing more could be done, and that I should make myself as comfortable as possible while I lived. It seemed more than I could bear, for I felt my two children needed me. All my life had been lived in church work, done in love to God, and I could not understand why I should suffer so. Then, one never-to-be-forgotten day, this thought flashed into my heart: If God is testing your love and faith by sending this long trial, why are you using means to rid yourself of His discipline? It was a new thought, an enlightening one. At once I destroyed all material remedies, and trusted my heavenly Father to heal me or take me to Himself. I did not know then that I had turned toward that which our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, speaks of on page 1 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" as "an absolute faith that all things are possible to God." The promise of our Master, "Knock, and it shall be opened unto you," was now fulfilled to me, for in a few days a dear neighbor brought the message of Christian Science to me. The first treatment given me healed the internal cancer, and a later treatment banished paralysis of the bowels of two years' standing.
In all the fourteen years since, there have been many opportunities to prove the power of Truth which makes us free, and there has come a peace before unknown, as faith has grown stronger and love purer. Only steady growth and trustworthiness can tell of my gratitude for the consecrated life of our Leader, whose "longing to be good and true," as the hymn runs, "has brought the Light again."
And I do not forget, either, the practitioners who have so lovingly, patiently, and steadfastly helped me to know the truth. We know that the good work which God has begun in us, He will finish; for He is omnipotent.
