Soon after I had enlisted in the army, in 1918, while en route to an eastern camp, I was attacked with severe pains in my side. After arriving in camp I wired a Christian Science practitioner for treatment for appendicitis. By this time I was scarcely able to walk. I was taken to a hospital, and an operation was performed immediately. Gangrene had started in. On the following day I read from my vest pocket edition of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Two weeks after the operation, while on his daily inspection tour, the major in command, pointing to me, remarked to a visiting officer, "There is a case that is a month farther along than ordinarily it would be." At the end of thirty-nine days I was permitted to return to my company. I felt perfectly fit, and on the third day after my return my name was posted on the "overseas" list. We underwent thirty days of intensive training during extremely hot weather in a southern camp. Every day men were carried from the ranks, overcome with the heat. At every opportunity I tried to apply the little understanding I had gained of Christian Science, and attended church services in camp when possible. The Christian Science Welfare activities overseas were a great source of comfort. I do not know what I should have done without them. During all these experiences the ninety-first psalm was a constant help. I had been told it was the "soldier's psalm."

Over fifteen years ago my hearing was not what it should have been. In 1925 this condition grew rapidly worse until I almost lost it completely. I held constantly in my thought the definition Mrs. Eddy gives on page 585 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Ears. Not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding," and tried to know that I could not be deprived of my spiritual understanding of God. In about ten days my hearing became normal, and has remained so.

My wife and I use Christian Science daily as a practical guide in all problems in the home and in business. I cannot express my gratitude in words for my better understanding of our Father-Mother God. I am deeply grateful for all the authorized periodicals, for our practitioners and lecturers, the Church Manual, and the textbook.
