May I be allowed to correct a misstatement appearing in...
Examiner
May I be allowed to correct a misstatement appearing in the report of a sermon delivered by a clergyman in St. Paul's Church, which only recently came to my attention. The subject was admirable in showing the necessity of deep thinking. While the statement was somewhat abrupt that Christian Science "starts off with the lie that there is no pain, but people who have sat up all night with pain know that there is," I agree that it takes more than superficial thinking to prove the statement to be not a lie, but demonstrably true. Pain, discomfort, and distress are now uniformly conceded to be mental. Matter of itself, without mind, is sensationless. Pain being mental, one is liberated from its bondage by the process, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." If Truth destroys it, it must be error—to be logical. A mental condition calling itself pain is of the mortal, carnal mind, which is "enmity against God." This seeming opposition to God, also called "devil" and "evil," is destroyed for us and for all humanity when it is known that there is but one infinite Mind, Truth, which is God, good, filling all space and having all power. This leaves no room for any opposite reality or existence.
May I assure the clergyman that logical, deep thinking, of which he approves, applied to Christianity, is responsible for filling Christian Science temples throughout the world with scholarly and cultured people, who drive there in "fine automobiles." I might also say that many come otherwise, because "God is no respecter of persons," and freedom from pain, suffering, and sickness is for all, as Christ Jesus, the great Way-shower, preached and practiced: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." "Heal the sick."
